Every day we get datapoints confirming the rise of online advertising. So many they tend to blur into a low level hum. But I couldn't let this item pass without a comment.
The UK's Daily Telegraph has carried a news report analysing Google's SEC filing for 2006. The smallprint shows that, in the UK, Google (£821m) has already overtaken Channel 4's advertising revenues (£775m) and - at its current rate of growth - will eclipse ITV, the UK's leading commercial TV broadcaster (£1.63bn but falling), in just two years.
Google are being helped in their pursuit by ITV's current knack of finding reverse gear whenever any rapid forward movement is required.
Two years is a long time and things may change but even so, just the threat that Google could eclipse the once mighty commercial ITV network is a massive statement.
